In praise of boozy shakes

Considering that booze and milkshakes are well known to be two of the best things there are, it’s a wonder it took so long for combining them into delicious summer goodness to become a thing. The thing has become pretty common now and it’s one of the things we look forward to most about the dog days. Here are our picks for the best around town.

Mount Washington’s Nickel Taphouse has four varieties, including the Keep Calm and Creme Brulee, with Four Roses bourbon, dulce de leche, vanilla ice cream, and St. Elmo’s Fire, and the blueberry-infused Boo All the Girls I’ve Loved Before. But we’re partial to the Sweet and Sour (pictured). It may not have a fancy name, but it does have bacon, along with salty caramel ice cream and Four Roses bourbon.

Spike Gjerde recently announced that he would shut down his take on a diner, Belvedere Square’s Shoo-Fly, which kinda makes sense—the place never seemed to settle on an identity and the food was hit and miss. The boozy shakes, on the other hand, were consistent hits. Word is the joint will be open through the summer and may move across the street to the Belvedere Square Market after that, so go and get yourself a delicious Spiked Peach and Cream shake while you can.

For the perfect summer meal, you could do a lot worse than a trip to Abbey Burger Bistro, winner of City Paper’s 2013 Best Burger Bracket. Take, for example, the Baltimore Burger—Roseda black angus topped with homemade crab dip, applewood smoked bacon, and cheddar cheese—and a Berger shake, made with Berger cookies, vanilla ice cream, Stoli vanilla, and Godiva liqueur. Five other options available.

For a restaurant inside a chain hotel, The Yard at the Inner Harbor Marriott makes a suprisingly awesome locally sourced boozy shake. The Sweet Baby Jesus Milkshake uses DuClaw’s Sweet Baby Jesus chocolate-peanut-butter porter, along with a vanilla vodka, Kahlua, mashed-up Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, chocolate ice cream, and chocolate syrup.
