The Ugly Sweater Run

Dec. 19

Running a 5k in the winter sounds like misery. It conjures memories of middle school gym class, where we had to run a painful mile every week no matter the weather (this was in Florida, full disclosure, where winter meant a nippy 40 degrees in the sun, but still). But maybe that wouldn't have felt so bad if we'd been wearing heavy knit sweaters with reindeer on them, or if we'd been promised hot chocolate and/or beer once we'd finished, or if we'd been running for charity. Turns out, you can do all of this at The Ugly Sweater Run, among festive decorations, photo ops, music, ugly sweater contests, and more. If all of this sounds frivolous to you, well, funds from this 5k are intended to benefit Save the Children, which helps kids in 120 different countries and "invests in childhood – every day, in times of crisis and for our future." 9 a.m., Rash Field, 201 Key Highway,, $40-$50, free for kids ages 5 and under.
