Metro New Year's Eve Karaoke Blowout

Dec. 31

It has been quite a year, hasn't it? Feels like it's been a few years, really, since last New Year's Eve, with all the stuff that's happened. That's kinda what we say every year, because New Year's Eve always offers the illusion of closure, that the shit we were dealing with will fall away. And sometimes it does, you know—certain things soften with time, but some things don't, and we (collectively and individually) have to keep working through the shit. Seems wise to ease that transition into the new year by belting out our favorite Mariah Carey, David Bowie, and Nirvana songs, doesn't it? This karaoke night is organized and competitive, mind you: At 10 p.m. you get to pick songs by the “Divas” (Mariah, Whitney, Cher, et al); at 11 it's “Prince vs. Bowie”; at midnight you spin a wheel to pick a song; at 1 a.m. it's new wave; and then at 2 a.m. it's anything from the 1990s. All of that is bookended by an hour of anything under the sun that you feel like singing and, hey, each hour judges will pick a winner who gets a free pass to Metro Gallery for one year. 9 p.m., Metro Gallery, 1700 N. Charles St., (410) 244-0899,, $5. (Rebekah Kirkman)
