2015 Gift Guide: East Monument Street

East Monument is a historic shopping district that has, like so many of the city’s once-hopping spots, declined for all the same reasons so many other things in this city have declined (neglect, white flight, deindustrialization, the dominance of chain stores, crime), though there’s still plenty to check out on East Monument. For one, Monument is a sneaker mecca in the city thanks to the Foot Locker (2236 E. Monument St., [410] 342-2420, footlocker.com), Shoe City (2237 E. Monument St., [410] 276-3434, ycmc.com), Downtown Locker Room (2239 E. Monument St., [410] 327-2328, dtlr.com) and Sport Express (2327 E. Monument St., [410] 675-2698) that are all pretty close together, and sprinkled throughout are some pawn shops in which you will undoubtedly find something of interest—or better yet, something rare or strange because the key to bargain-hunting or finding something just plain odd is to go where the other pickers do not go, and they are not going to Monument these days.

Make sure you check out Dough Boy Clothing (2331 E. Monument St., [410] 916-6602) and rapper Young Moose’s store, Out The Mud Clothing (2334 E. Monument St., [410] 522-5616, outthemudclothing.com), which is one of the few places where you can get physical copies of his music (especially important because for the most part, his raps are not available on the internet for download) and while you’re there you can also pick up, among other things, OTM baby clothes, trucker hats, T-shirts, jerseys, and, if Moose has an upcoming show, tickets. If you’re lucky, Moose might even be there and you can take a selfie with him. And make sure you stop by Flawless Damsels Boutique (2414 E. Monument St., [443] 708-5505, flawlessdamsels.com), a women’s clothing store that was looted during April 27’s riots but is now, thankfully, back in business. If you’re hungry, swing through the Northeast Market (2101 E. Monument St., [410] 685-6169, bpmarkets.com/northeast), a partner to the other markets in the city including Lexington or Fells’ Broadway Market—it’s a place to get some fruit and vegetables and, of course, deliciously unhealthy fried junk too.
