2015 Gift Guide: Aliceanna Street

If you’re like me, you might irrationally imbue physical objects with a heavy sense of nostalgia. Ticket stubs from movie dates, old photo-booth strips, newspaper clippings of your first published article, all of them wield some emotional pull that makes it hard to throw them away. Here’s an idea: Instead of letting those gather unseen but obsessively hoarded in a box somewhere (not that, um, I’m guilty of this), take them to The Frame Room (1706 Aliceanna St., [443] 602-7976, theframeroom.com) to get ’em framed as a gift. How much would your mom love it if, instead of another generic piece of jewelry, you gave her a custom frame filled with pictures of you two throughout the years? It’s definitely sentimental, perhaps nauseatingly so, but hey, some people are into that. The Frame Room also makes shadow boxes, so you can frame objects too, not just flat photos. Yeah, custom frames are more expensive than some generic 8-by-10 from Jo-Ann Fabrics, but it’ll look a hell of a lot nicer, and you’ll be helping out a local business. And currently, if you say “I support the water wheel” when you place your order, 10 percent of your purchase will be donated to building a new Canton Water Wheel.

If that’s too saccharinely sentimental for your tastes (or you procrastinate too much—custom-frame orders take about two weeks, so plan accordingly), you could still support local businesses by hopping across the street to Katwalk Boutique (1709 Aliceanna St., [410] 669-0600, facebook.com/KatwalkFashionShowroom) and picking up some handmade soaps and body lotions made by Mitchell and Co., a mother-daughter duo based in Baltimore, according to Katwalk owner Toni James.
