4. "The Memo" (Single Carrot Theatre)

Baltimore hit politically spirited 1960s European plays out of park this year, as Single Carrot's production of Václav Havel's 1965 black comedy is the third such entry in this list. Stephen Nunns directed this excoriating send-up of a nameless bureaucracy's absurd attempt to be more inefficient by requiring intra-office communications to be written in a nonsensical language nobody understands. A laugh riot for its entire ride--though it's extremely discomforting to see echoes of contemporary technocratic corporate America in this biting satire of communist Eastern Europe. (BM)
