Freddie Gray Protests: The Battle of Sandtown-Winchester

About a hundred Baltimore City Police officers and 30 residents of the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood clashed in the early hours of April 26, the seventh day of protests surrounding the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody. During the fight between residents, who were throwing bricks and projectiles at police, and the police who charged the streets several times, City Paper photographer J. M. Giordano and a protester were swarmed and beaten. Giordano kept shooting, catching images of police surrounding the protester with batons. The protester, who had been seen in earlier photos yelling at police, was arrested. Check out all of our Freddie Gray coverage here.
