There’s a lot to unpack in the American criminal justice system, in that it’s just insanely corrupt and bureaucratic; and in the sense that our severely overcrowded prisons and jails pack in about a quarter of the world’s incarcerated population. In his new book, educator and activist James Kilgore—who knows the criminal justice system inside and out, having spent over six years in prison and many more doing research—covers just about all the bases, from the War on Drugs to the growing imprisonment of women, transgender people, and Latinos to the school-to-prison pipeline and more.
