Thursday: Erotic as Power: Black and Latinx Reflections After Pulse

July 21

While Pride will almost certainly be a boisterous celebration of LGBTQ life, just as it's always been, there will no doubt still be lingering feelings of fear and sadness from the mass shooting at an Orlando LGBTQ club in June. As Brandon Soderberg wrote in our issue immediately following the shooting, clubs like Pulse are "a refuge and a place where people can go and be themselves." This talk touches on a similar theme, featuring a panel of black and Latinx LGBTQ activists who will "explore the impact of violence and criminalization within these spaces." The panel will be moderated by Jasmine Pope and includes Lilian Amaya, co-organizer of the Latinx LGBTQ support group IRIS Baltimore; Gabe Cazares, a gay Latino and government affairs specialist at the National Federation of the Blind; Jaki Griot, who runs the website for the alternative sexuality and kink communities; and speaker Ignacio G. Rivera. Their reflections are important to hear. 6-9 p.m., The Real News Network, 231 Holliday St.,, free. (Brandon Weigel)
