Saturday: Wonder Show of the 21st Century

June 11

So, Cirque du Soleil is in town once again (June 9-12 at Royal Farms Arena), this time channeling James Cameron’s “Avatar.” There’s no doubt that the show will be impressive—interpreting the rich, visually stunning alien world of Pandora for the circus ring is no small feat—and props always go to Cirque for bringing in huge audiences worldwide without the use of elephants or tigers or whatever sad creature has been forced to tap dance. But big-budget circuses can’t provide what a small troupe like Baltimore’s own Circus of Wonders can; that is, an intimate experience of old-school sideshow spectacle—and an affordable ticket. The Circus of Wonders’ one-night show at the Creative Alliance features intense stunts, storytelling, juggling, contortion, magic, music, and something called “witch cabaret.” They had me at “witch.” 8 p.m., Creative Alliance, 3134 Eastern Ave., (410) 276-1651, $15-$21.
