Saturday: The Snails, The Sneaks, Harpo, Jumpcuts

May 21

Those Future Islands fellas, on top of making great music, are doggedly dedicated to the city in a way that a band of their stature totally doesn't need to be anymore. Vocalist Sam Herring is jumping on bills all the time under his twisty-turny hip-hop side project nom de plume, Hemlock Ernst, Gerritt Welmers' gritty Eno side project Moss Of Aura is out and about, and hey, there's the Snails—featuring, among others, Herring and Future Islands' bassist William Cashion—a fractured pop group in which all of the members dress like Snails (RIYL: Kiwi pop, early Elvis Costello, or Devo at their art fuck-iest). In February, the Snails put out their new album, "Songs From The Shoebox," and the combination of soaring horns and Herring's signature howl suggests a kind of dweeby Roxy Music (that's a good thing). 9 p.m., The Ottobar, 2549 N. Howard St., (410) 662-0069,, $12. (Brandon Soderberg)
