Saturday: D. Watkins "Baltimore's Son" book giveaway

April 23

On May 3, D. Watkins (disclosure: a contributor to City Paper and friend to the paper) releases his second book, "The Cook-Up," a memoir that begins with the death of his brother Bip, a major influence on his life intellectually, attitudinally, and creatively, and ends when Watkins decides to stop dealing. It's unbelievably great, especially in its quasi-narrative tangential structure. But Watkins is also aware that a lot of readers know him from his essays—a series of which were collected last year as "The Beast Side"—and maybe don't have 25 bucks to shell out for his nice new hardback (though if you can swing it, you totally should). So, he comes to Red Emma's with a limited edition book that features the essays he's published since "The Beast Side" arrived and it's free for everybody who shows up. Inside the book is a 20% off coupon for "The Cook-Up" if you buy it at Red Emma's. 7:30 p.m., Red Emma's, 30 W. North Ave., (443) 602-7611,, free. (Brandon Soderberg)
