Monday: Magic Mike Monday

Oct. 2

I am really, super into the artistry and performance in Channing Tatum's oily, almost-nude beefcake body writhing around on stage and atop sawhorses in his woodshop to Ginuwine's 'Pony,' featured in "Magic Mike" and its sequel "Magic Mike XXL." But what I appreciate most about the films are their underlying themes of male friendship amongst the Kings of Tampa, perseverance despite shrewd bosses, the growth and development of one's own craft (the scene in XXL where Joe Manganiello's Richie performs an impromptu, molly-fueled romp with gas station snacks all to get a smile from the stoic female clerk, seemingly a revelation for Richie and the other men about what they're doing these routines for), and the elevation of female pleasure. Conceptually, there is quite a lot to unpack in both of these films but it's also a ton of hot muscular bods for your eyes to traverse, which is no less important. "Magic Mike" at 7 p.m., "Magic Mike XXL" at 9:30 p.m., SNF Parkway, 5 W. North Ave., (410) 752-8083,, $8-$10 for each screening or $16 for a double-feature. (Rebekah Kirkman)
