Monday: CoHosts II: The Yes Men & Transmodern Festival

Nov. 28

One of the Contemporary's biggest contributions to the dialogue and community-building in the local arts scene and beyond has been its CoHosts Speaker Series, bringing notable figures in the art world—past speakers have included the Guerrilla Girls, Andrew W.K., Nick Cave,  and Coco Fusco—to Baltimore while highlighting a local artist-run gallery, event, organization, or other platform. The series returns tonight for a second year with Baltimore's Transmodern Performance Festival, which wrapped up its 13th annual week of performance art, dance, music, video, and installation on election day (the timing and topical themes of the work led me to consider how citizens and public figures perform politics and civic duty). The featured speakers are Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno, also known as Jacques Servin and Igor Vamos, also known as The Yes Men. For two decades, in films and in public appearances, the duo has posed as corporate criminals as a means of activism. So, really, there's no telling who we're going to hear speak tonight—perhaps some of the president-elect's top aides? 7 p.m., Baltimore School for the Arts, 712 Cathedral St., (443) 388-8980,, free.
