Friday: The Last Poets' Umar bin Hassan

Oct. 21

City Paper has been knocked out by the expansive and compelling poetry scene in Baltimore. It's happening all over and is full of smaller scenes, teams, and collectives and spans from East to West and back again, stopping in Station North and elsewhere, too. We named the poetry scene here "Best Scene" in our Best of Baltimore issue, dedicated a cover story to the youth and adult slam poetry teams in Baltimore (penned by poet Fire Angelou, who is part of this event), and featured a poetry insert in last week's State of the Arts issue. This event, featuring the legendary Umar bin Hassan of the Last Poets, along with locals Slangston Hughes and Lady Brion of the adult poetry slam team and activist/MC/spoken word performer Son Of Nun (and hosted by rapper Eze Jackson, who released the excellent song, 'Unapologetically Black') is another example of the poetic talent in Baltimore. 8 p.m., The Real News Network, 231 Holliday St., (866) 396-4231,, $8.
