Friday & Saturday: Two Nights With Lower Dens

Jan. 15 and 16

Jana Hunter's forever-molting, ostensibly guitar-based band/project Lower Dens have been City Paper favorites since their 2010 debut, "Twin Hand Movement." Lately though, Hunter's interests have been growing even wider and more ambitious with a clear focus on collaboration and addressing issues in the city. There was the existential, dance-able album from last year, "Escape From Evil" (City Paper's No. 2 album of the year in our Top Ten of 2015) which paired ’80s-esque beats with the humanist philosophy of Ernest Becker (talk about dancing your pain away) and that Pitchfork op-ed about white artists and Baltimore. The band also recently took Abdu Ali on tour which seemed like an active decision to blow the minds of their fans in other towns. And personally, I always enjoy seeing Hunter DJ. Now there is this two-night show at the Ottobar, with Lower Dens headlining and a diverse group of openers: On Friday, the lineup is Chiffon, Elon, and Cex; and on Saturday, Abdu Ali, Microkingdom, and DJ Isabejja. 8 p.m. each night, The Ottobar, 2549 N. Howard St., (410) 662-0069, theottobar.com, $13 for each night, $20 for both. (Brandon Soderberg)
