Friday: Bollymore

Sept. 8

"I escape to the youth under the falls/ They sang songs/ and I can pretend I understand/ until they ask my name./ I see that of the world is here/ and nowhere" writes Dewan in a poem called 'Last Winter, Kerala,' a meditation on the dis/connection one has to one's roots, posted on Bollymore's Tumblr. Organized by Baltimore and D.C.-based artists (Priya Bhayana, Ayes Cold, Amy Dewan, Sun Hashmi, Jacob Marley), the new, bi-monthly dance party Bollymore bills itself as a space for people to gather and hang and appreciate the art, culture, and sounds of South Asia. Amy Dewan hosts the party tonight, while Jacob Marley, Nikilad, and DJ Beti take turns spinning "a blend of subcontinental sounds" (check out Nikilad's 1990s Tamil Hits Mix on Soundcloud for a preview). 8 p.m., Metro Gallery, 1700 N. Charles St., (410) 244-0899,, $5 advance, $7 door. (Rebekah Kirkman)
