Friday: 25th Annual Pancake Eating Contest

Nov. 18

Immediately after voting in the last two elections, my friends and I went to Pete's Grille, located a few blocks away from our polling place, to toast fulfilling our civic duty with fluffy pancakes and salty-sweet chicken and waffles. Now, days after the international disaster of the presidential election results, I'm ready to go back to the neighborhood breakfast and lunch spot to stress eat till I can finally get some damn sleep. The only things that can make coping by way of breakfast better are cheering onlookers and a cash prize, and Pete's has been offering that special opportunity for the last quarter century. Unfortunately, sign-ups just closed, but you can still observe local mouth-stuffing athletes (though, the restaurant emphasizes, this contest is for amateurs only) as they go for the gold—or maybe silver dollar, in this case. And you can always order a stack and compete unofficially against friends. 7 a.m., Pete's Grille, 3130 Greenmount Ave., (410) 467-7698,, free to attend. (Maura Callahan)
