Murder Ink 8/23: 7 murders this week; 225 murders this year

Another week, another seven murders, although one of the victims counted in this week's column was stabbed last September and died in March. There was also a mass shooting Monday in the Park Circle neighborhood which left three people injured and one man dead.

Monday, Aug. 14

12:30 p.m. Terrence Newman, a 23-year-old African-American man, was on the 1600 block of Abbotston Street in the Coldstream Homestead Montebello neighborhood when someone shot him more than once. Police and medics responded, and Newman died in a hospital soon afterward. Newman had resided on the 3000 block of Norfolk Avenue. So far this year there have been two other murders within a block of where Newman was killed: Desean Mcelveen, a 17-year-old African-American boy, was shot on the 1700 block in January and Maurice Stovall, a 33-year-old African-American man, was shot on the 1700 block in May.

Wednesday, Aug. 16

10:30 a.m. Rondell Williams, a 29-year-old African-American man, was in a vehicle on the 2500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue when somebody shot him multiple times. Police found him there; he died soon after at a hospital. Police say he had resided on the 4300 block of Norfolk Avenue.

Thursday, Aug. 17

9:45 p.m. David Deminds, a 23-year-old African-American man, was on the 500 block of N. Edgewood Street when someone shot him multiple times in the body. He died. Police say he made his home on the 1800 block of Division Street.

Friday, Aug. 18

11:45 p.m. Devante Monroe, a 24-year-old African-American man, was on the 1600 block of Cliftview Avenue in Darley Park when someone shot him in the chest. Police and medics found him there. He died at a hospital. Monroe had resided on the 1600 block of E. 25th Street, which is roughly two blocks from where he was killed.

Saturday, Aug. 19

9:45 a.m. Allen Rice, a 22-year-old African-American man, was on the 2700 block of The Alameda in the Coldstream Homestead Montebello neighborhood, where he resided, (and which is also the same block where Dashon Houston was gunned-down in March, and Brian Banks and Maurice Mayo were shot to death in May of last year, and David Lamont Nolan was killed two Augusts ago), when someone shot him multiple times in his body. He died in a hospital shortly afterward.

Monday, Aug. 21

9:30 a.m. Four people were shot on the 3400 block of Cottage Avenue, and one of them—a 54-year-old man who police have not yet identified publicly—died from a bullet in his upper body. Police found three shooting victims on the street. Besides the 54-year-old man, there was a 24-year-old man who was shot in the upper body and a 53-year-old man who was shot in the foot. Shortly after that, a 38-year-old man arrived at a hospital with at least one bullet wound in his upper body. Police believe that at least one suspect walked onto the block and opened-fire on all the victims.

On Sept. 23, 2016, Wanda Brown, a 39-year-old African-American woman, was at the Crown gas station on the 1000 block of W. North Avenue when she argued with a man, who stabbed her in the belly. She was hospitalized and then died on March 27, 2017, at a medical facility. An autopsy determined that Brown died as a result of the stabbing, and police announced it on Aug. 18, so she is added to this week's murder count.

On July 6, according to Baltimore Police, Jivon Brown, a 26-year-old African-American man, turned himself in at the Central District Police office and confessed to the July 5 murder of Darryl Owens Jr., a 23-year-old African-American man, and the shooting of a 25-year-old woman on the 2600 block of Roselawn Avenue. Police had previously announced that they had a "person of interest" in the case; it is unclear why they waited six weeks to announce Brown's arrest.

The person who was shot to death on the 4100 block of Chesterfield Avenue on Aug. 11 was Thomas Johnson, a 16-year-old African-American boy.

The person who was killed on the 5000 block of York Road on Aug. 11 was Carlos Watkins-Smith, a 23-year-old African-American man.

The person who was shot to death on the unit block of North Abington Avenue on Aug. 11 was Theron McClary, a 28-year-old African-American man.

The man who was found shot to death on the 1500 block of Holbrook Street on August 12 was James Wellman, a 32-year-old Caucasian man, who had lived on the unit block of West Lexington Street.

On Aug. 15, Baltimore police arrested Cornelius McBride, a 34-year-old African-American man, at his home on the 2300 block of Calverton Heights. McBride is charged with murder in the March 25, 2016 death of Kahlil Cannady, McBride's 6-month-old son. Police found Cannady at University Hospital where he had been taken with head trauma. The first story police heard was that Cannady's 10-year-old sister possibly had dropped him on his head while bathing him. The Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide. McBride is charged with murder and child abuse.
