Updates

Police released the name of the man killed on May 15 on the 2400 block of East Hoffman Street. He was Wade McKinley Purvey Jr., a 29-year-old African-American man who lived on North Bentalou Street.

Police released the name of the man killed on May 17 on the 1700 block of North Carey Street. He was Shawn Hickman, a 22-year-old African-American man. His last known address was on the 3900 block of Edgewood Road, police said.

Police also charged a 21-year-old woman for the murder last year of her 1-month-old daughter. On May 19 police arrested Damira Latham and charged her with the first-degree murder of Melody Johnson. On Feb. 18, 2014, police responded to Latham’s home on the 1100 block of Montpelier Street and found the baby not breathing. The medical examiner determined she had died of head injuries, but the manner was undetermined. On May 12 of this year, police interviewed Latham about a separate incident involving suspected child abuse, and, police say, Latham “confessed to being frustrated by the baby, while sitting, slamming the baby down on her legs, causing the infant’s head to snap back and strike a television stand.”
