Murder Ink: 2/4/15

The Northeastern District became noticeably murder-prone over the past two weeks, continuing the trend of last year, after a yearlong, successful effort to tamp down on killings in the area just south of the NE district. Last year on this date there were 28 murders.

Monday, Jan. 26

9:38 p.m. Marlon Harvey, a 32-year-old African-American man, was stabbed to death on the 2500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. He died there and police say they don’t know the motive for the attack. Harvey resided on the 1000 block of Brantley Avenue, police said.

Wednesday, Jan. 28

1:30 p.m. Davon Johnson, a 28-year-old African-American man, was on the 2300 block of Walbrook Avenue, about a block from his residence on the 2000 block of North Bentalou Street (and seven blocks from Monday’s murder), when he was shot multiple times. Medics got him to a hospital where he died soon after. Homicide detectives are looking for leads.

Thursday, Jan. 29

11:53 a.m. Stephen Foreman, a 40-year-old African-American man, was driving near the intersection of Stamford and St. Gemma roads, just feet from the city line in the West Hills neighborhood, when he was shot in the head. Police were called and found that two vehicles had collided and two men were shot. The other man was hospitalized.

1:27 p.m. James Smith, a 49-year-old African-American man, was shot in the head on the 2400 block of East Lafayette Avenue in Broadway East. He died at the scene.

7:10 p.m. Stephen Vaise, a 60-year-old Caucasian man, was found in his home at 4403 Prudence Street, shot to death. Police are looking for witnesses.

Friday, Jan. 30

6:43 p.m. Victor Underwood, an 18-year-old African-American man, was shot in the head on the 3000 block of Liberty Heights Avenue, right where the Park Circle neighborhood borders Burleith-Leighton. He died soon after in the hospital.

Saturday, Jan. 31

11:00 p.m. Marvin Barrett, a 24-year-old African-American man, was on the 5300 block of Frankford Avenue when someone shot him in the head. Medics responded, then cops. Barrett, who resided on the 1600 block of Northbourne Road, about four miles from where he was shot, was taken to a hospital where he died.

Sunday, Feb. 1

2:10 p.m. Derrick Dargan, a 25-year-old African-American man, was on the 600 block of North Ellwood when someone shot him in the head. A woman who was nearby was also shot in the back and leg. Dargan died, but the woman is expected to survive, police say. Dargan resided about two blocks away on the 3000 block of McElderry Street, according to police.

3:40 p.m. Tavares Swinson, a 36-year-old African-American man, was on the 4500 block of North Rogers Avenue when someone shot him in the head. He was also hit in the body and died on the scene. Swinson reportedly lived on the 1400 block of Longwood Street, about four miles from where he was killed. Police are looking for a motive.


Police identified the 22-year-old African-American man killed on Jan. 25 on the 4500 block of Furley Avenue as Dashawn Allbrook. He lived on the next block.

On Jan. 14, 2015, a Baltimore Circuit Court jury found Alvin Kelley Jr., 27, guilty of the Aug. 4, 2012 murder of Jefferie Thomas, who was shot repeatedly on the 3000 block of West Garrison Avenue in the wee hours of the morning. Kelley was convicted of murder in the second degree and use of a handgun in a crime of violence. The jury was told that the killing was part of a gang initiation. Prosecutors said Kelley shot Thomas in the back, back of the head, and the hand, and indicated it might have been done execution-style, with Thomas bound and on his knees. Kelley allegedly confessed to the killing.
