Three murders over two days within a four-block stretch of Park Heights Avenue punctuated the week’s violence. We’re still about 17 below the count at this time last year.

Monday, Sept. 1

9:53 p.m. Temmel Washington, a 26-year-old African-American man, was in front of his residence on the 700 block of Linnard Street in Edmondson Village when someone shot him in the head. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:37 p.m. A woman was with him, and tried to enter the house. She was shot in the stomach and taken to a hospital. She was treated and released.

Tuesday, Sept. 2

1:03 a.m. Qureem Holloway, a 24-year-old African-American man, was sitting on his front porch on the 4700 block of Park Heights Avenue when someone shot him multiple times. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 3

9:33 p.m. Two blocks and less than 45 hours after the last murder, Austaniel Brown, a 22-year-old African-American man, was shot in the chest while behind a house on the 4900 block of Park Heights Avenue. He died at a hospital about an hour later. Police says Brown lived on the 4800 block of Beaufort Avenue, about a 10-minute walk from where he was killed.

11:17 p.m. Less than two hours later Vernon Van Johnson, a 27-year-old African-American man, was shot to death while on the 3200 block of Spaulding Avenue. The location is approximately one block north of the 4900 block of Park Heights Avenue. Johnson was shot in the torso. He was taken to a hospital, where he died just before midnight. Police say he lived on the 2500 block of West Baltimore Avenue.

Sunday, Sept. 7

11:55 p.m. A block party on the 2200 block of Cecil Avenue in the East Baltimore Midway neighborhood was interrupted by gunfire when Kevin Bass Jr., a 29-year-old African-American man, was shot in the torso. He died at a hospital soon after. Meanwhile, a woman who was shot multiple times made her own way to the hospital. Police say she is expected to survive.

UPDATES

On Aug.29 police announced that they had charged two men with the Aug. 5 murder of Bruce Paige on the 500 block of North Monroe Street. Dominic Deschamps, a 31-year-old African-American man, and Che McDowell, a 23-year-old African-American man, are charged with first-degree murder for shooting Paige multiple times in the head and torso. The warrant for McDowell was issued on the day of the murder, according to court records. McDowell was arrested on Aug. 7 and Deschamps on Aug. 28.

Citing new DNA evidence, police arrested Phillip D. Lee, a 55-year-old African-American man who lately has resided in a nursing home, for the 1981 rape and murder of Anna Dorthea Smith, a 75-year-old Caucasian woman. The arrest came in mid-August, and Lee is in jail. The announcement came Sept. 5. Lee has a long record of burglary and drug charges. Smith lived alone on the 2500 block of West Fairmount Avenue. She was found on Dec. 7, 1981, strangled to death.

Correction

Richard Muir, the man who was shot to death on Sept. 1 near his home on the 1800 block of Druid Hill Avenue, was 29 years old, not 31.
