Continued bitter cold, snow, and ice could not dampen Baltimore’s murder rate very much. There were 13 murders in February this year, against just 10 in 2014. Still, last year the city had two more murders as of this date.

Monday, Feb. 23

11:56 p.m. Leedell Brown, a 25-year-old African-American man, was in the Hott Spot Lounge (aka 5 Seasons) at 830 Guilford Ave. when he was assaulted. Police came to the club and found him; medics took him to a hospital where he died from the beating, according to police. Brown resided on the 2900 block of Lakebrook Circle.

Tuesday, Feb. 24

6:26 p.m. Owen Crayton, a 24-year-old man, was in the basement at 363 Marydell Road in the Irvington neighborhood when someone shot him at least once in the chest. He died there. On Feb. 25 police arrested Joseph Ryles, a 25-year-old African-American man, and charged him with the murder. According to the charging document, Ryles was the only person in the basement when Crayton was shot. Police did not find the gun. The arresting officer noted that Ryles was prohibited from having a gun because of a previous felony conviction for drug dealing.

Wednesday, Feb. 25

10:47 p.m. Police found a 22-year-old man who they have not yet identified inside a car on the 5600 block of Loch Raven Boulevard. He had been shot in the body. The man was taken to a hospital where he died. Soon after the first man was found, another man walked into the hospital with several gunshot wounds. He is expected to live. Police believe the second man was in the car with the first man when he was shot.

Saturday, Feb. 28

3:46 p.m. Dwayne Reid, a 40-year-old African-American man, was with three other men on the 4300 block of Welbourne Road in the Hillen neighborhood, a block from Morgan State University, when someone shot them all. Reid died there; the other three men are expected to survive. Reid lived on the 5500 block of The Alameda, about a mile from where he was killed.


Police announced a new “Public Enemy Number One” and captured him two days later. Charles Henson was wanted in connection with the murder of Davon Johnson on Jan. 28. Johnson was shot multiple times on the 2300 block of Walbrook Avenue that afternoon.

Police have arrested two men and charged them with the Dec. 1 murder of Martel Rooks, on the 3900 block of Penhurst Avenue. Deandre Boyd, 19-year-old African-American man, and Jonathan Winkler, a 20-year-old African-American man, are held without bail.

Police identified an officer who shot a person on the 1000 block of N. Fremont Avenue on Feb. 22. He is David Austin, 49, a seven-year veteran of the city police department. He shot a man who charged him after a traffic stop, police said.
