Another quiet week in a year with a much below-average murder rate. Police reported only two other shootings. They also announced an arrest in a homicide.

Tuesday, July 8

4:10 p.m. James Huntley, a 40-year-old African-American man, was on the 3000 block of Spaulding Avenue, near the Pimlico race track, when he was shot multiple times, including in the head. He died soon after. He is the third person killed in the Central Park Heights neighborhood this year. Police say Huntley’s last known address was eight miles away in Belair-Edison.

Police arrested the mother of a 21-month-old boy who died on June 30. Cierra Curtis, a 19-year-old African-American woman, is charged with beating the boy to death. Police say that officers on patrol heard a woman screaming on the 5800 block of Reisterstown Road and found Curtis outside a motel. The boyfriend, Kevin Green had the baby, Jayden Curtis, who was not breathing. He died soon after, and the medical examiner determined he had been beaten to death. Cierra Curtis is charged with murder, assault, child abuse, and neglect.
