Murder Ink: 8 murders this week, 278 murders this year

Eight people were murdered this week, three on Sunday alone. Two people were charged with murder.

Tuesday, Oct. 20

3:50 p.m. David Brown, a 35-year-old African-American man, was shot in the legs and back on the 1100 block of Poplar Grove Street in the Franklintown Road neighborhood. Police found him there, and medics got him to a hospital, where he died.

Wednesday, Oct. 21

10:20 a.m. Maurice Swilling was on the 3600 block of Pulaski Highway in the Orangeville neighborhood when someone shot him in the upper body. Police found him there and medics got him to a hospital, where he died. Swilling had resided on the 3300 block of Elmley Avenue, about two miles from where he was killed.

Thursday, Oct. 22

1:20 p.m. Daniel Blackston, a 31-year-old African-American man, was sitting on the front porch of a house on the 1400 block of Gorsuch Avenue when a man wearing a ski mask walked up and shot him in the leg and chest, then ran away. Blackston died soon after at a hospital.

6:20 p.m. Andrew Mack, a 31-year-old African-American man, was with a 24-year-old woman on the 2000 block of McKean Avenue in the Mondawmin neighborhood when someone shot them both. Mack died in a hospital, and the woman, according to police, "received life-threatening injuries." Police say Mack resided on the 1300 block of Liriope Court in Belcamp, Harford County.

Friday, Oct. 23

7:40 p.m. Travon Venable, a 26-year-old African-American man, was shot in the head while on the 1800 block of Aisquith Street in Oliver. Police found him there and medics took him to a hospital. He died there later.

Sunday, Oct. 25

12:10 p.m. A 36-year-old man who police have not yet further identified was on the 100 block of South Schroeder Street near Hollins Market when someone shot him in the upper body. He died at a hospital soon after.

3 p.m. Dustin Howes, a 34-year-old Caucasian man, was on the 1500 block of McKean Avenue in Sandtown-Winchester when someone shot him in the upper body. He made it to a hospital but died there.

9:05 p.m. Larry McDaniels, a 32-year-old African-American man, was on the 2900 block of Garrison Boulevard in the Garwyn Oaks neighborhood when someone shot him in the upper body multiple times. He died from his injuries.

Updates

Police arrested Wayne Smith, 18, of the 1400 block of Union Avenue and charged him with first-degree murder in the Oct. 12 shooting death of Avery Kelly. Kelly was on the 1100 block of Cleveland Street at 8 p.m. when he was shot in the head more than once, according to police. In a statement the police said that detectives "couldn't have solved this murder, were it not for members of the community who provided information that led to this arrest."

On Oct. 21 members of the Warrant Apprehension Task Force arrested Jerrod Battle, 29, of the 3400 block of Dolfield Avenue at a TGIF restaurant in Baltimore County. Battle is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Terrance Johnson of Fredericksburg, Virginia, who was killed outside of Valentino's Restaurant on the 6600 block of Harford Road just after midnight on Oct. 15. In 2008 Battle was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with five suspended, for armed robbery.
