Murder Ink 8/10/16: 4 murders this week; 178 murders this year

Four homicides and two homicide arrests: excellent progress by Baltimore standards.

Baltimore police made two homicide arrests this week for three murders more than a year old. They also arrested four people for attempted murder. It's still not enough to keep up, although this year is not as bad as 2015. Last year by this date there were 196 murders.

Wednesday, Aug. 3

9:00 p.m. Tyrone Cooper, a 34-year-old African-American man, was on the 2500 block of W. Fayette Street in Shipley Hill when someone shot him in the upper body. He died on the scene. Cooper had lived on the 4700 block of Wakefield Road.

Thursday, Aug. 4

9:55 p.m. David Hill, a 45-year-old African-American man, was on the 1600 block of McCulloh Street when someone shot him. An ambulance took him to Shock Trauma, where he died. Police say Hill resided on the 200 block of Oak Street.

Friday, Aug. 5

11:00 p.m. Tony Thornton, a 38-year-old African-American man, was on the 500 block of E. 26th Street, in Better Waverly, when someone shot him in the back. Another man who was there was shot in the hand. Thornton died at a hospital; the other man made it to the hospital on his own and is expected to survive.

Sunday, Aug. 7

5:10 a.m. A man who police have not yet identified publicly was shot in the upper body on the 2500 block of E. Madison Street in the Milton-Montford neighborhood. He died on the scene.

Updates:

The man whose decomposing body was found on July 28 on the 5600 block of Govane Avenue has been identified as Tyrone Stokes, a 39-year-old African-American man.

Police have identified the skeletal remains found June 15 in a vacant house on East North Avenue as Robert Lamont Branch, a 35-year-old African-American man.

Police announced they arrested Jamal Dunn, a 27-year-old African-American man, and charged him with first degree murder in the shooting deaths of Anthony Dionne Turner, 21, and his father, Frank Anthony Turner, 48. Police found both men dying on the 3900 block of Edmondson Avenue on New Year's Day, 2014.

Police also arrested Samuel Scott, an 18-year-old African-American man, at his home on Aug. 4. Scott is charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of Robert Lee Jackson, 33, on the 800 block of Belnord Avenue on July 13, 2015.
