Because of the 4th of July holiday, this Murder Ink column covers June 21 through noon, July 1. Rapper Lor Scoota was gunned down in his car on Saturday night, June 25, on the way out of an exhibition basketball game and peace rally. His death prompted an outpouring of grief and support from fans, including an impromptu vigil that briefly blocked North Avenue on the West Side. There were also 29 nonfatal shootings this period. Last year on this date, the murder count was 147.
Tuesday, June 21
6:30 p.m. Christopher Collins, a 25-year-old African-American man, was on the 1300 block of Glenwood Avenue in New Northwood when someone shot him in the chest. Police found him there. He died soon after at a hospital. Collins had resided on the 900 block of E. 43rd Street.
Wednesday, June 22
12:30 p.m. Donzell Canada, a 29-year-old African-American man, was near the intersection of North Fulton Avenue and Presstman Street when he was shot. He died soon after at a hospital. A 16-year-old boy was also shot in the leg, and is expected to survive. Canada resided on the 1100 block of N. Fulton Avenue, about four blocks from where he was killed. His is the third homicide this year in Sandtown-Winchester.
10:35 p.m. Damon Mullen, a 33-year-old African-American man, was on the 4000 block of Wilsby Avenue in the Pen Lucy neighborhood when someone shot him in the upper body. An ambulance got him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Thursday, June 23
4:35 a.m. Maurice Eley, an 18-year-old African-American man, was on the 6200 block of Fairdel Avenue, about a block from his home, when someone shot him multiple times. He died there. Police say a witness heard shots and saw a dark colored pickup truck speed away.
Friday, June 24
12:45 a.m. Leo Cooper, a 31-year-old African-American man, was on the 3300 block of Caton Avenue, walking toward the Sunoco gas station on Baltimore Street, when someone shot him in the chest. A police officer found him in the street. Medics took him to Shock Trauma, where he was pronounced dead. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots. Cooper had lived on the 800 block of W. Lombard Street, according to police.
7:10 p.m. Marquise Addison, a 25-year-old African-American man, was on the 3400 block of Ravenwood Avenue when someone shot him in the upper body. Police and medics responded, getting him to a hospital, where he died on June 26. Addison lived on the block where he died.
Saturday, June 25
6:56 p.m. Tyriece Travon Watson, better-known as the rapper "Lor Scoota," was driving east on Moravia Road, on his way from a peace rally and basketball exhibition when someone who a witness reportedly described as wearing a white bandana stepped into the road in front of Watson's vehicle and fired a gun, striking Watson in the upper body. Watson was taken to a hospital, where he died soon after. He had resided on the 1900 block of Clifton Avenue, according to police.
Sunday, June 26
8:55 p.m. Davon Booth, a 32-year-old African-American man, was on the 3400 block of Elmora Avenue, sitting on a stoop, when someone shot him in the stomach. Police found him there, conscious and breathing, and medics got him to a Johns Hopkins hospital, where he died. Booth had resided on the 1000 block of Billie Holiday Court. His was the second murder in the Four by Four neighborhood in two days. Last year there were three.
Monday, June 27
10:20 a.m. Darrow Coady, an eight-month-old African-American baby boy, was beaten to death in an apartment on the 5600 block of Sinclair Lane. Police came for a report of someone not breathing and found the boy near death. An autopsy performed on June 28 ruled the death a homicide by blunt force trauma. Police arrested the boy's father, Darrow Keith Coady, Jr., 22, and charged him with murder the next night. They found him at the Mondawmin Metro station.
Tuesday, June 28
12:50 a.m. Brandon Holloway, a 43-year-old African-American man, was on the 1800 block of Edmondson Avenue when someone shot him in the head. He died there. Holloway had resided on the 3600 block of E. Fayette Street, according to police.
9:29 p.m. David Golden Lii, an 18-year-old man, was shot while sitting in the passenger seat of a car on the 600 block of N. Ellwood Avenue. Someone heard the shots and called police, but by the time they responded, Lii was at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he died shortly thereafter. He is the third man shot to death this year in the Ellwood Park/Monument neighborhood. Lii lived on the 2400 block of E. Oliver Street.
Thursday, June 30
9:30 p.m. Willard Bryant, Jr., a 36-year-old African-American man, was in the alley behind his house on the 4500 block of N. Rogers Avenue in Woodmere when someone shot him. Police found him there, and a doctor at a hospital pronounced him dead.
