CURTA, JPEGMAFIA, Height Keech, Melanin Free

Oct. 15

Oh man, here's quite an evening of art-rap that is also, well, a fun listen, unlike a lot of art-rap. CURTA, art-damaged electro-ish abstract rap from Colorado, links up with a whole bunch of similarly-minded Baltimore or former Baltimore rappers and rap-not-rap artists, including recent Los Angeles transplant JPEGMAFIA, who came to Baltimore around 2015 and constructed a series of records that seemed to capture the Baltimore Uprising and then the slow-drip dread of the Trump administration; local legend Height Keech, who is one of the few rappers around that understands what makes old school rap old school (and whose whole hustle is a major influence on where good weird rap is in this city, just saying); and Melanin Free, the noise-rap duo of Qué Pequeño and Jenghis Pettit, who mix Japanese noise with Detroit techno with Funkadelic rock with an internet rabbit hole-like selection of samples. 8 p.m., The Crown, 1910 N. Charles St., (410) 625-4848,, $8. (Brandon Soderberg)
