If Tortoise were from Eastern Europe instead of Chicago, they'd sound kinda like D.C.'s Les Rhinocéros. And John Zorn loves Les Rhinoceros, so that's all you need to know. They play a star-studded lineup at the Windup Space Oct. 31, with Witch Hat, Microkingdom, and Beyond Say.
Bluesy psych rockers the Flying Eyes just completed a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund their in-progress album, due to be released May 2013. The band raised $10,768 and plays with psychedelic legend Roky Erickson at the Ottobar Nov. 11.
Two days later at the Ottobar, you can catch Deerhoof creating a maelstrom of noise and twee. Expect some funky rhythms too. CP's "Best Band" Dope Body, hot off their European tour, supports.
Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner recently announced that she will temporarily join Horse Lords on tour in October, sitting in for Max Eilbacher. In more Wasner news, Frenchkiss Records releases a Flock of Dimes 7-inch on Nov. 20. Hear the dreamy A-side "(This Is Why) I Can't Wear White" on the Frenchkiss web site.
On Sept. 21 Friends Records released an album of reworked Weekends songs entitled Acoustic Tape. While the album clears up Weekends' haze a bit, largely by eschewing distortion, it's still got plenty of echo to keep things shimmering. Friends Records also announced that they will be releasing Secret Mountains' debut, Rainer, early next year. They play the Metro Gallery Nov. 17 with Orlando dream-poppers Saskatchewan, the ever-charming Wing Dam, and the lovely drone duo Smoke Bellow (disclosure: RSTBG shares a practice space with Smoke Bellow).
Golden West hosts a benefit for the fight against polycystic kidney disease, also on Nov. 17. Last year's edition raised over $1,000, and this year post-rock loop masters the Water and alt-country boundary-pushers Among Wolves play for the cause.
