What's up with jazz and blues

Two shows this month at An die Musik are worthy of your attention. Prolific saxophonist and Baltimore School for the Arts grad Antonio Hart is joined by Warren Wolf on vibes for two shows on May 17. The Saturday after, John Lamkin II plays trumpet along with son John Lamkin III on drums, Todd Simon on piano, and Romier Mendez on bass for an evening of hard-bop jazz standards.

Acoustic singer/songwriter Karter Jaymes is among a deep lineup of acts performing May 26 at the Sowebo Arts and Musical Festival. You might remember the bluesman for his 2011 Grammy nomination for the song "Ain't Leaving Without You," which he wrote in 1981, long before R&B artist Jaheim revived the tune for his 2010 album, Another Round.

The Federal Hill Jazz and Blues Festival returns June 2 and will feature Bonerama and the Honey Island Swamp Band, both fresh off of playing at this year's New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The hometown favorite Cris Jacobs Band is also scheduled to take the stage.

Jazz vocalist Marianne Matheny-Katz and her husband, Howard Katz, celebrate six years of hosting jazz and blues shows at their home-cum-venue Jazzway 6004 on June 29. Headlining the anniversary show are fellow Mack Avenue label artists Warren Wolf and up-and-coming young jazz pianist Aaron Diehl, who released his Mack Avenue debut album, The Bespoke Man's Narrative, in March.
