There was a time when the Facebook group Baltimore City Voters was a place for intelligent discussion, sometimes bringing the people of power into the dialogue. We even named it Best Facebook Group last year for its steadying hand during a rather crazy mayoral election. That ship, however, has sailed. Now, it is a place where every morsel of news is parsed over endlessly—with some people unwittingly posting the same links to a story on different threads—to settle various scores and yell the same points back and forth. It has been an echo chamber, though one that still seems to think it has massive influence, with tech-utopian moderator David Troy often bringing a taste of Silicon Valley thinkfluencing to the Land of Pleasant Living. Anybody beating their head against a wall at City Hall would have as much of an impact in solving the city’s problems.
