By now it’s mostly acknowledged by science and government that marijuana is an enjoyable and relatively safe recreational drug that for many with depression, anxiety, cancer, and PTSD is also medicine. That means that, in a logical universe, decriminalization—or even legalization—ought to be imminent. But we don’t live in such a universe. So instead, we have State-Licensed Medical Cannabis, replete with all the lobbying, grubby back-room dealing, ignored potential black growers, and the high stakes we’ve already got with legal gambling. Because of course: Why allow people to grow their own when the government can make random millionaires out of a lucky few contestants?
