Best Business: Red Emma’s

30 W. North Ave., (443) 602-7611,

There are endless ways to praise Red Emma’s—their collectivist business model, their clear interest in diversity on the staff, their stellar book selection, their excellent events, or their fucking delicious falafel—but more than all of that, let’s praise the place as a whole and the way it legitimately offers up its space to any and everyone. And especially with Station North changing for the worse—really, really fast, it seems—Red Emma’s kicks against courting a certain kind of customer or clientele and really, at times, says fuck it and doesn’t even ask you to be a customer, opening up its tables and electric outlets to those who need a place to charge their phone, get off their feet, or hide from the rain as they wait for the bus, for free. That’s solidarity.
