Best Space: Bell Foundry

Before it was condemned last December and its tenants abruptly evicted, the Bell Foundry was for years a landmark in the arts scene, hosting shows, artist studios, and the headquarters of the Baltimore Rock Opera Society (who were permitted to return to the space, after making safety improvements, until their lease ends this year). Leading up to the closure, the building had become increasingly inclusive to the marginalized, and more shows featured and were organized by people of color and queer folks—a necessary respite from the white, male-dominated DIY. Now, its shell remains largely empty, for sale, waiting to be gobbled up by developers bent on harnessing the real estate value of the neighborhood and nothing more.
