Best Staying Power: Leon’s

870 Park Ave., (410) 539-4993,

Mention Leon’s to a Baltimorean and they’ll likely know you’re talking about the oldest gay bar in the city. Leon’s has been around forever, operating as a gay bar since 1957. Back then you could get in only if you knew the password: “Are you a friend of Dorothy?” Now everyone’s invited, and the pride flag hanging outside is a welcome reminder that queer folks still have a home here. Leon’s boasts excellent happy hours (we love when things get “doublicious”), welcoming regulars and DJs who get us dancing. As the neighborhood continues to morph and change, we have faith that Leon’s—the third oldest gay bar in the entire country—will keep us nice and queer over here.
