Best Specials: Cafe 1137

7216 Windsor Mill Road, Windsor Mill (410) 298-1137,

This Windsor Mill spot (now with a Greenmount Avenue express location, too) mixes the quick and delicious, cheap-and-greasy take-out model found in plenty of Baltimore neighborhoods with a dash of foodie culture finesse—and we’re not saying that just because its menu is written on a chalkboard. Cafe 1137 is best known for its platters (fried or grilled steak, chicken, crab, and a variety of fish with garlic herb rice corn and crab side) but it’s the specials—usually we find out about them through its Instagram—that keep the place exciting: crispy fish tacos, crab mac and cheese, a crabcake po’ boy, and so on. The most memorable special is the football-sized fried whiting sub, with burnt-in-that-good-way whitefish stuffed inside a roll cheesesteak-style that is doused with a tangy sauce somewhere between seafood-informed aioli and McDonald’s special sauce (this is a good thing).
