Best Shake-Up: Schools Chief Gregory Thornton

It’s too early to assess whether Gregory Thornton’s ouster as schools chief was a good move for the 80,000 kids who attend Baltimore Public Schools, but as far as political intrigue and theater go, it was spectacular. Minutes after the end of a routine May 3 Board of Education meeting, The Sun’s Erica Green broke the story, saying the CEO’s last day would be that Friday. Thornton’s two years were deemed “divisive,” with ministers and politicians calling for a change in leadership. The board never let on publicly that they were replacing him until it was a fait accompli and, according to Green, they offered his job to Sonja Santelises two days before the Sun reported Thornton was out. Devious behind-the-scenes machinations from this school board; let’s hope it made the right call.
