While sitting in horrible Baltimore traffic on the way to some generic happy hour, we had something of an epiphany: a memory of a place that looks out over the Chesapeake on a pretty secluded “island” that’s a mere 15 minute drive from the city. Hitting up Dock of the Bay in Miller’s Island (near Dundalk) on a Thursday evening was the best decision we made all week. A known weekend spot with a line to the parking lot and dozens of boats moored at the adjacent marina, Dock during the week was much more relaxing, as we had the place mostly to ourselves. It’s positioned on the Back River with views of two islands (Hart Miller and Pleasure). It’s a beautiful illusion that made us forget the city for a few hours. The restaurant specializes in seafood, with dozens of Maryland blue crabs available in season. We sat at a spacious table and looked out at the Chesapeake while sipping on a Tequila Sunrise and grapefruit crush, thinking about all the people crammed into some bar in Baltimore without feeling the breeze coming off the water.
