Best Programming: Sugar

1001 W. 36th St., (410) 467-2632,

In our reader’s poll last year, Sugar, the Hampden establishment that proudly touts itself as a “lesbian owned, multi-gender operated, for profit, mission driven sex toy store,” beat out the motherfucking Internet as Best Sex Shop and was also awarded “Best Sex Shop To Take Your Mom To,” which was, to be honest, just another way to come up with an award in which to praise this store we’re lucky to have here (although we did take our mom there when she wanted to go and it totally wasn’t weird and the people working thought it was cool). Over the past year, though, we’ve also observed Sugar really stepping up its game in terms of events and classes, including appearances by Feminista Jones, “Come As You Are” author Emily Nagoski, and a month-long twerking workshop by Bunny Vicious, which not only taught those in attendance how to twerk but also “twerk history, ontology, it’s afro-diaspora siblings, and appreciation vs. appropriation.” And that’s on top of the ongoing courses which include a monthly rope salon, g-spot classes, and lots more.
