Best Op-Ed: Kevin Rector

Every once in a while news reporters at the traditional dailies get to step outside the confines of their beat and form to slip over to the editorial pages to pen some more personal pieces. Crime and courts reporter Kevin Rector did just that this summer, writing a sincere, open, and heartfelt op-ed about his experiences as a gay man trying to process the shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. In it, he delicately wove together the ideas that such shootings don’t immediately have to become political tug-of-wars, and the victims of gun violence in Baltimore need the same outpouring and support that the LGBTQ community received in the aftermath of Pulse. Rector’s piece showed not only the experience he’s accrued while covering our city, but also his gifts as a writer.
