Best Italian: Hersh’s

1843 Light St., (443) 438-4948,

Safely tucked away on the outskirts of Federal Hill, blocks away from the hustle and bustle of the frenzied Baltimore neighborhood, Hersh’s is serving up some of the freshest Italian food in the city. Chef and co-owner Josh Hershkovitz revels in the fine details of each and every dish—he’ll even refire the signature Neapolitan-style pizza in the wood-burning oven if it doesn’t initially come out with a perfectly charred crust and seductive, melty cheese. Plates of fresh pasta, ranging from a comforting carbonara to a truly sublime ravioli stuffed with homemade ricotta are enough to rectify even your worst of days. But it’s the rotating antipasti menu showcasing the region’s seasonal ingredients in simple-yet-stunning ways, like the heirloom tomato crostini with black pepper aioli, that will keep you coming back every week. Come with friends, enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, and just order everything.
