Best Hardware Store: Falkenhan’s Hardware

3401 Chestnut Ave., (410) 235-7771, falkenhanshardware.com

When the over-staffed and over-whelming big-box Home Depots or Lowe’s get you down—alas, they have plenty of help but few employees who actually know their stuff—Baltimore’s best local hardware store, Falkenhan’s steps in to fill the gap. This is the place to go when, say, your door handle fell off and you can carry in the little doohickey thingamajig that was holding it all together and hand it over to the knowledgeable staff and admit, “I don’t know what this is but it seems to be essential, do you have one of these around to replace it?” Nine times out of 10, they do. Discreetly tucked in a Hampden basement, this store was purchased by the current owner’s father in 1968 and is one of Baltimore’s beloved neighborhood shops.
