Best DIY Venue: Tubman House

Earlier this year, Leaders Of a Beautiful Struggle, Friend of a Friend, and Communities United took over a vacant rowhouse in Sandtown-Winchester—right across from the Freddie Gray mural on North Mount and Presbury streets—and dubbed it Tubman House, an “illegally”-occupied city-owned building on the docket for demolition turned Community Center (it is one of 16,000 buildings currently vacant in the city). A bit more loaded than the ever-changing roster of warehouses and gutted interiors where you catch punk bands, art shows, and multidisciplinary performances (though hey, those are important, too), the Tubman House provides services where the city has failed, including community outreach, food drives, activist gatherings, and more.
