Best Clown Car: The Mayoral Primary

The professional protester. The comeback story. The long-time local politician. The councilmember heaved into the national spotlight. Even in a city known for its outrageous politics, it was difficult to keep track of all the 21 candidates who made this year’s primary race for mayor a circus act. At mayoral debates and forums all fall, the candidates, like circus clowns piling out of a small car, kept crowding stages at venues across the city. With the incumbent mayor stepping aside after a year of rough news for the city, everyone and his brother apparently had the same idea: “Christ! If that person is running, even I might stand a chance.”
