Best Clean Slate: New City Council

Despite a crowded field, there wasn’t much new to report in the race for our city’s next mayor. Catherine Pugh won the Democratic nod, and although she will face Republican and Green Party candidates, she is our presumptive next mayor. City Council, though? That’s a whole different story. Even before a ballot was cast, we were guaranteed change. Six of 15 incumbent members were already out the door—three retired, two ran for mayor, and one ran for Circuit Court judge. One of the newbies that came out on top was Shannon Sneed, who bested current Councilman Warren Branch in the Democrats’ race to represent the 13th District. And in the Ninth District, Democrat William “Pete” Welch was bested by newcomer John T. Bullock. Change is good, very good.
