Best Stage Series: The Trans* Voices Workshop Series by Cohesion Theatre and Iron Crow Theatre

Last year, we gave Highlandtown’s Cohesion Theatre Company our Best New Theatre award in part for its keen social justice bent and commitment to collaboration with other local theater groups. This year, Cohesion kept that roll going by working with Iron Crown Theater (“Baltimore’s only queer theatre”) to bring the Trans* Voices Workshop Series. The companies workshopped plays by transgender and gender non-conforming playwrights, including an adaption of Shakespeare’s gender-bending “Twelfth Night” by Phil Vannoorbeeck, a fully-staged production of the semi-absurdist comedy “A Little Bit Not Normal” by Lillie Franks, and Cohesion co-founder Alice Stanley’s “Aphorisms On Gender.” The platform gave the playwrights recognition in a culture where their work is often ignored; for audiences, the series provided opportunities to see work in the development process.
