It is hard to find an art scene that’s more democratic and seemingly accessible than the poetry scene in Baltimore. Writers and performers who are published and unpublished, experienced and less so, come together and share stages at the growing number of reading series and open mics (there must be at least one a week now). That cross-pollination between those who’ve been in the game for a while and those who are just starting out is exciting, too, supporting everyone where they’re at while also encouraging them to keep blooming and expanding. The wave of poets we’ve seen around town ranges from spoken-word artists to MFAs to experimental and avant-garde performers to those who fall between any of those lines. And this year, after both Baltimore’s Youth Poetry Team and Team Slammageddon (the city’s adult slam team) took home their respective top national awards, we’re wondering: What’s next?
