The brainchild of a handful of alumni from the creative writing graduate program at University of Baltimore, Writers and Words is a Goldilocks of a reading series. It isn’t avant-garde—the sort of series only folks with fine arts degrees could appreciate—but it isn’t a parade of safe literature for suburbanites either. On the second Tuesday of every month, Charmington’s café hosts this blend of poetry and prose from regional writers and poets. The series has featured hometown favorites such as D. Watkins and Jen Michalski, but it has also woven in monthly “wild card” readers such as Dr. Dana Cunningham, who read from her recently published children’s book about kids with incarcerated parents. This format of putting established talent next to emerging writers is tied together by hosts with the charm and wit to bring in standing-room-only crowds every month.
