Best Musical: “Assassins” by Stillpointe Theatre and Spotlight UB

The cast and creative team of “Assassins,” last fall’s collaboration between Stillpointe Theatre and Spotlight UB, killed it in every way, so to speak. Directors Ryan Michael Haase and Kimberley Lynne and a talented cast presented an exceptional production of Stephen Sondheim’s Tony-winning musical about notorious presidential assassins, including John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald. Stillpointe routinely offers audiences polished, mightily-voiced shows, and the “Assassins” collaboration with UB Spotlight was another example of the company’s small but powerful performances. Moreover, the demented patriotism of the piece was a perfect reflection of our current political climate—we’d love a pre-election encore this fall.
