Best Label: Friends Records

The record label Friends, co-founded by Brett Yale and Jimmy MacMillan in 2009, has been a great ambassador for Baltimore music since day one. So it was a bit surprising when MacMillan, who now heads the label by himself, told The Sun’s Wesley Case in July that he recently thought Friends had run its course. Luckily for the city, Friends got a big shot in the arm in 2016 when music industry veteran Bruce Gearhart invested in the label and helped broker distribution deals that will take Baltimore music around the globe. The label marked this new beginning by creating a more cohesive website and announcing a slew of releases from Moss of Aura, Other Colors, Bond St. District, Wing Dam,  and others, some of which are already out. The scene benefits when people as dedicated as MacMillan succeed, and we’re looking forward to seeing what Friends Records does in the coming months and years.
